They range from the completely ‘homespun’ method of doing-it-yourself on your inkjet printer, to paying for a freelance designer or budget online logo company to create your business card for you. You may want to consider using the business card template resources that can be easily found online.

As a designer and marketing manager with over a decade of industry experience (working for large corporations, print companies, as well as freelancing for small business clients) I feel qualified enough to offer you my own insight into creating your business card using business card templates that you can find on almost all online print sites.

Your cheapest-of –the-cheap business card template option is to design and print business cards yourself using those perforated Avery business card sheets that you can buy at Staples for $16.00. Don’t do it!!! I mean, there’s doing it yourself, and then there’s trying to feed cardstock through a printer and making a complete inky mess!

Here’s a rundown of the problems you’ll encounter when ‘shoe stringing’ your business cards with an Avery busines card template and an Inkjet Printer:

  • You’re going to have to create your business card design in Microsoft Word, Open Office, or other such office program that was clearly never meant for designing and printing business cards!

  • Those Microsoft Word templates are unbelievably frustrating to work with. As an experienced designer, even I find it difficult to try to create a half-decent business card layout. The biggest problem with Avery templates (hidden somewhere in the bowels of the ‘envelope’ menu in the ‘tools’ header) is that you have to create a whole page of business cards at once. The business card template is populated by two columns of business card ‘cells’ (that roughly match your perforated print sheets) in which you are required to individually ‘cut and paste’ your design elements. During this tedious cut and paste process, hitting the wrong key, or pressing return where you’re not supposed to will result in a jumbled series of business card design cells with all the text, shapes, objects, lines, or images in bizarre alignments.

  • Using plain text to create your business card design will probably work out fine, but just try to insert any pictures from an outside file or include shapes or images from your picture menu and you’re asking for trouble – trying to align them inside a cell just doesn’t work!

  • From a graphic design point-of-view, using the design elements in Word is not advisable. The autoshapes and clip art available from the insert menu have barely changed since the 90’s. They represent a garish and fluorescent mix of random images that I last saw being used to ‘spruce up’ my schoolteacher’s handouts! It would also be ill advised to use any text effects from the Word Art menu. The choice of bubblegum-style, gradient-heavy effects on offer will make your business card look like you gave it to a high-school cheerleader to design!

  • Once you have your design ready to go to print then you will encounter a whole new set of jamming and ink running problems. These are the same inkjet printer problems that that you’ve probably encountered every day, but intensified due to the difficulties of using thicker paper and the need for exact print alignment.   • If you’ve managed to get to the stage where you have printed sheets of business cards without smashing your printer or throwing your monitor out of the window, then you can begin the fun of bending and tearing the perforated business cards. This is not easy. Not only is it fiddly and time consuming, but you’re certain to ruin a few business cards that won’t tear properly down the perforations!

  • The quality of your card stock and the ‘inkjet-fuzzy’ look and feel of your cards will be a dead-giveaway that you’ve made them on your office or home printer. Inkjet cartridges and laser print ink is EXPENSIVE!!! Trying to print out reams of business cards at your home or office will suck up all your ink and end up costing you more than you probably think!

Unless you are prepared to shell out money to get your business card designed and printed by a professional designer, your only other option is to look online to design your business card. It might be interesting to know that many designers will use budget online print resources to print your product- utilizing the ‘upload your own design’ option that’s provided by the majority of print sites to send your design to print! Pay a freelance designer to create your card and they may well be using the very same online company that you were also thinking of using (even if they say that they’re getting your cards printed at ‘cost-a-lot-fancy-print-boutique’.) Cost-wise, you’ll probably pay around $40 to $50 for 500 business cards, which is not a lot of money to shell out for a real business card product. Two themes that are central to my business philosophy, and ones that I believe many other people will share, and respond to. You see, I don't NEED to pretend to be something I am not, I have a few things in place that I believe in, and I have a network that is building on strong foundations.

When I surf around business-oriented networking sites (Yuwie and DirectMatches in the main) I see a constant stream of spam, smoke and mirrors. You introduce yourself to someone, and they reply with something along the lines of "Nice to meet you, tell me about your business. By the way you should look at this system, it's making 1000s every day, so here's the link".

The thing is, the majority of people you might meet on those sites are doing something very similar so, after a while, you start automatically filtering this "noise" out. This is such a shame, because these networking sites are incredibly powerful tools for everyone, with real connections to be made on a business level, and socially. I love meeting people online from the world over, but spam is spam no matter what language it speaks.

So are people inherently liars, with a desire to spam the hell out of everyone? NO WAY!

They do this because they have a dream, and they have learned from their system's instructions that this is the way to do it. In the current climate, maybe it is one way of doing things. With so many people, pulling in so many different directions, there is perhaps a need to get your message across quickly and efficiently. The thing is though, most people will automatically filter you out, no matter how great your system may actually be.

So is there an alternative? You might have guessed it already, but yes I think there is. Honesty.

Actually, not just honesty, but also throw in transparency, respect for others, and making genuine connections with your fellow inhabitants of this planet.

To give an example, when I make a new connection with someone online, I generally start out by leaving a comment on their profile page, thanking them for the "friend add". I use their name because I bothered to check it, maybe I say something nice about their profile page (if I liked it) and I wish them a good day (or something similar) - you get the idea I'm sure.

What I don't say is anything about the systems I use, nor do I explicitly give them referral links. They can of course take a look at my profile, or web sites; what they do beyond that point is up to them.

This approach has given me 2 things; contact with some really lovely people that I have things in common with, and some good business leads and contacts. Many fall into BOTH categories.

When it comes to working with the people I sponsor, I again use honesty. If I sell them a story that doesn't pan out, they will very quickly lose trust and respect in me, and faith in the system. No, what I offer them is honesty, support, advice, and encouragement. They of course need to provide the desire, effort, and willingness to stick at it for more than 5 minutes, but they do all that within a supportive environment.

So why bother using this approach? Well, for one thing, it allows people to move beyond the superficial level, fosters real relationships, and leads to ways of working smarter rather than harder. It also frees up some of the time that would be spent spamming everyone with referral links; time that can be spent on working with your team, developing your business, or communicating with online friends in meaningful ways.

Cut away the need to "act out" a role, and that energy can be used far more productively; even freeing up time to spend with your family!

So why do I think this approach works? The key to that is understanding WHO these marketers you meet online actually are. The majority are NOT MLM gurus, nor are they running a large company. Most of them are office workers, housewives, students, IT guys, truck drivers, landscape gardeners etc. etc. In other words, they are ordinary people like you, trying to earn extra income, and gain access to some of the good things that a bit of wealth can provide.

The current methods are turning us into faceless robots, typing and clicking for hours on end, acting out online versions of the "foot in the door" salesman! We as a global community should be connecting at deeper levels, not jumping from the wage slavery frying pan into the "small cog in a giant internet money making machine" fire.

Let's keep it honest guys, let's be more transparent and let people know we are just trying to do the right thing for our family. People will respect that and, what is more, it is something they will continue to respect because there is no mask to slip off.

People respond to people, so just be yourself.

Some of the cons include difficulty in concentrating when everyone is around. Some may be easily distracted and frequently interrupted. This is understandable though, if there is only one parent home. The kids need things , especially when they are younger. Because of this some may find they stay up too late doing the things that require full attention. It can be easy to say "oh I'll do that later" since there are no deadlines or a boss to report to. Keeping motivated may be difficult because there is no one there to edge the person on. Therefore, it can be easy to slack off.

If the person doesn’t have their own office it can be difficult to have the quiet that is required. Doing as much as possible during the day that doesn't require a lot of thinking or concentration may be a solution. Save the other stuff for when the kids go to sleep. Even if there is an office, the kids may be at the door demanding this or that. This is when a strict schedule and rules need to be enforced.



Some people require adult conversation. Not being around other people besides kids can really cause a person to go stir crazy. That's why it's important to get out sometimes. Go to dinner and a movie with your spouse, lunch with friends or even just a walk to clear your head of all the demands of the kids. Some may rather quiet and to be by their self sometimes.

These are some of the pros and cons of a work at home business. Some may agree with these and some may not. Everyone has there own tolerance and preference. Weighing these and making the decision that fits one’s family is a great way to decide if working at home is best or if going out of the home to work is best.

Your Website needs to look professional and trustworthy in order to create buyer confidence. A poorly designed Website will cost you business. These days, that can't be tolerated

So where do you need to start ?

1. Choose a Domain Name.

A domain name is the web address of your website (i.e. www.bizhelp24.com). All websites must have a domain name before they can go live on the Internet.

If you have an advertising budget to promote your business, then it is beneficial to choose a domain name that is the same as your business or gives people an idea of what you sell. Alternatively, if you do not have a large budget, it may be more beneficial to use a domain name that includes a 'keyword' so that when people search for something specific your site has a better chance of being found.

For example if your site is about relieving back pain, a domain such as 'www.backpainrelief.xxx' will be more likely to show up in searches.

Either way, you need to use a name that benefits your long-term business aims, and not something that is restrictive. E.g. 'wellheeled123.com', might be a clever name for a business that sells exclusive shoes. But if that business then diversifies into other products, the website name is no use anymore.

2. Design Your Home Page.

The Home Page is probably the most important page. It's the first page your visitors will see, so you need to make a good impression. On this page, you should communicate who you are and why you have a website. You want to make sure that your message is clear and not lost in long paragraphs. Try to divide your text into sections that you can mark with headers in a larger font or using bold text. Don't underline text as this can make it look like a link.

One of the most important aspects of the text on your home page is the "Call to Action".

"Call to Action" is the text that tells your visitors what you want them to do next. Do you want them to call and schedule a consultation, visit your shop, or just browse the other pages in your website? Make this command prominent by changing its color or increasing the font size.

Also consider uploading an image or two onto your Home Page. A colorful image will help to captivate your visitors and they will be more likely to continue browsing your site.

You need a simple Home Page that clearly communicates your website's purpose and goals.

3. Design Your About Us Page.

The About Us page of your website should be used to reveal a little more about yourself or your business. Consider any additional details that might be important to your customers.

4. Design Your Contact Us Page.

You are now getting very close to having designed a good 3-page site. The last element that all websites should have is a Contact Us page.

Include the best way to contact you directly on this page. Make your phone number or email address prominent on the page, perhaps with different font styles.

Make sure to keep this page simple though, as you don't want your customers to get distracted by other content. Ensure each page in your site has something valuable to offer. Don't design 'Pretty, But Useless'. Let's step back and realise that a web page exists to provide something that's useful or interesting to visitors. If your page doesn't have that, then you must fix that problem before you worry about how to present it.

What are you offering to your visitors? Why is it worth their time to visit your site? Focus on that before you move on to how it should look.

5.Keep Advertising Ratio 25% or Less

Amazingly, I see some sites that are almost nothing but ads. We know that no one would turn on the telly if it were just adverts, or buy a magazine if it were just ads and no articles. By the same token, a website also has to have more than ads if it's to be successful. If you are running ads on your website, then you should ensure that the ratio to editorial is no more than 25% to 75%. Your visitors came to your site to see what YOU had to offer.

If you have affiliations and partnerships that are relevant to your site, then by all means include them. Don't do what I saw recently on a website for a large fabric retailer where the web designer had put her friend's Aromatherapy Massage practice in as a link. It's not professional.

6. Don't Distract With Blinking/Scrolling Text Or Auto Play Video/Audio.

Animation and sounds are distracting. How can anyone concentrate on reading what's on your site when there are things flying around the page? It's like trying to read a newspaper when someone's poking you in the shoulder repeatedly.

Scrolling text does nothing to serve the visitor. If it's on a site it's because the site owner thought, "Let me show how cool I am." Don't design the site for yourself, design it for the people who will actually use it.

If you have relevant audio or video on your site, make it so the visitor can play it when THEY want, not at start up.

7. Don't Use Image Backgrounds.

Full Image backgrounds mean "amateur". A site like this can also have extremely slow page-loading times. This is NOT a professional image, and will turn visitors away.

8. Put Thought Into Organization.

Think about what content you have and how it should be organized. This is just as important as what your site looks like, so spend time on it. You are not doing your visitors a favour if everything is thrown up in a haphazard fashion and they have to jump about the site looking for what they want instead of being informed.

9. Minimize Clicking!

This is so important. Put as few clicks between the visitor and the information as possible. Clicking around will make the visitor abandon the site and go elsewhere

10. Limit Page Length To 2 Screens.

This is where it gets a bit difficult. While you should put a lot into the design to limit clicking, you should also avoid going too far in the opposite direction by putting too much on one page.

You should normally limit a page to 2 screens. Articles by their nature, like this, are exceptions to that rule.

11. Include a Navigation Menu on Every Page.

Always include a menu on the page. This allows the visitor to start all over again at 'Home', or to click on another page that interests them.

Don't put navigation links only at the bottom of pages, because then users will have to scroll down to the bottom to get to them (unless your pages are very short).

12. Website Readability.

A line of text should be no more than about 600 pixels wide. What does THAT mean ? It means your website pages should be no wider than the middle 66% of your screen. The reason that newspapers and magazines are printed in columns is to make the lines short, so after you read one line, it's easy to find the start of next one when your eyes flick left.

The problem with wide layout is that the content will be too wide to read easily for those visitors with really large screens as the content expands to fit the screen (or window).

13. Use Contrasting Colours with Text. It is hard to read light text if it is on a light background, or dark text on a dark background.

There are also some combinations that just don't work. For example I came across a website just yesterday that insisted I try to read a bright green font on a bright red background. I persisted only because the company owner was seeking my advice and help.

14. Seek Advice.

If all this seems too much to take in, remember you can always call in the professionals. A good designer will take all of the above into account, and much more if he or she is considering the area of Search Engine Optimisation
